The Waitaki is a relaxing place to escape the crowds just one and a half hours drive from Dunedin and three hours from Christchurch. It doesn’t matter if you find yourself here on a weekend break with friends, a family holiday, or alone on business - you’ll find something different, something sweet in the Waitaki to add to your travel story.

The district has long attracted beautiful landscape seekers with it’s rolling hills, stunningly blue lakes, golden beaches and natural wonders—all of which makes up the Waitaki Whitestone Aspiring Global Geopark. The Geopark is steeped in history and waiting to be explored!

Take your time to explore the Waitaki. This is a district that’s brimming with stories from from the ancient land, a geological wonderland, to the Victorian heritage, and of course, the people. Your hosts across the Waitaki can range from luxury accommodation providers, boutique hotels, glamping, and you can even find a comfy bed in a treehouse!

This is a district that provides travellers with varied activities such as the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, jetboating, fishing, surfing, camping, second-hand shopping, art gallery hopping, wine tasting, and there’s even an interactive steampunk museum.

The vibrancy of the Waitaki extends to the locally produced geo-gastronomy; you can find award-winning dining at Fleur’s Place in Moeraki, Cucina and Riverstone Kitchen in Oamaru. The recent development into Viticulture within the North Otago and Waitaki Wine region is a unique success story where the humble grape has reached new heights. You’ll want to visit wineries with cellar doors, such as River T Winery and Ostler Wine’s The Vitner’s Drop, to sample the delicate tones born from the arid climate and limestone rich soils.

Everyone likes to get out of the office and explore new things, so when you can the Waitaki is here waiting for you, right in the sweet spot of New Zealand.
