Within the heart of Whanganui city you will find three individually unique venues and a team dedicated to ensuring your next event is memorable for all the right reasons.
Whanganui Venues & Events offer the ability to host your events, performances, workshops, meetings, experiences at one of the following venues:
• Whanganui War Memorial Centre
• Royal Whanganui Opera House
• Cooks Gardens Event Centre.
All venues are located in easy walking distance to each other as well as local cafes, restaurants and retail shops. Each venue has several spaces within them that can be setup to meet different requirements and the team can offer a range of services including AV/Technical. A dedicated Venue Coordinator will be assigned to your event and will work closely with you in the lead up and on the day.
The Whanganui Venues & Events team look forward to welcoming you to Whanganui where we can offer you a range of cultural and historical experiences.
All the venues managed by Whanganui Venues & Events have multiple versatile spaces to suit a wide range of event needs.
Whanganui War Memorial Centre includes The Main Hall, Concert Chamber and Pioneer Room with all rooms serviced by a foyer area off the spaces as well as large entry foyer welcoming you upon entry. These spaces are also serviced with a large forecourt that can accommodate up to 70 vehicles, but is also ideal for outdoor events including car shows, parades, and festivals. The Centre includes dressing rooms, located on both levels, fully equipped with toilets and showers perfect for performers or break out spaces / smaller meeting rooms.
The Royal Whanganui Opera House is a landmark cultural icon and is one of New Zealand’s last Victorian theatres still in operation. Within this amazing building you will find the Lounge & Bar for that intimate gathering or cocktail event with doors leading out on to a balcony. The stage and auditorium has a number of beautiful features including comfortable contemporary tiered seating for up to 800 people over two levels and a stage that is 13.4m wide between the arch (including the wings) and has a depth of 13.4m from the back to front. The hidden gem at this venue is “The Annex” which provides a wonderful quirky backstage experience for small groups and events where you want a point of difference. Dressing Rooms are also featured within the building – perfect for performers but can also be transformed into break out spaces or smaller meeting rooms.
Home to Peter Snell’s world record breaking mile in 1962, The Cooks Gardens Events Centre is renowned for its sporting and athletics events with a range of spaces including Cooks Meeting Room, Peter Snell Room and corporate boxes. This premier venue also offers a unique track-side setting for conferences, meetings, product launches, and weddings. There is a fully operational kitchen and bar with walk-in chiller space, ensuring all your food and beverage requirements can be catered for.
Across all three venues the Whanganui Venues and Events team provide a friendly, flexible and dedicated service. The team are able to assist with all aspects of your next event including AV equipment, furniture and room setup, event advice and expert support to ensure everything runs smoothly.
AV
Our spaces have a range of built-in and portable AV equipment that can satisfy a range of event requirements, and we also have the technical expertise in-house to manage it. If you need something additional, we have relationships with other suppliers and can source equipment for you if needed.
In addition, we have advanced equipment that can satisfy more complex requirements. This includes:

• Livestreaming
Furniture
Comfortable and versatile furniture is fundamental to creating successful events, and we can provide a range of options in-house. In addition to the basics - tables and chairs - we can also provide lecterns, flexible staging options, whiteboards and more.
Catering
We do not provide catering in-house, but we allow our clients to self-cater or engage a caterer of their choice. Standard tea & coffee is provided as part of all venue hire, with an option to upgrade to our premium package for a small additional fee if preferred.
